NEWS RELEASE

At approximately 3:00 pm on May 6, 2008 the Appling County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a Georgia State Patrol helicopter pilot that he had spotted some marijuana in a wooded area off Piney Grove Church Road. The patrol units that were dispatched to the scene confirmed the find. Personnel from the Governor’s Drug Task Force, Wayne County Deputies, Georgia Game and Fish Department, Altamaha Drug Task Force, Drug Enforcement Agency, Georgia State Patrol and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the operation. Approximately 933 plants were found and destroyed. Other evidence such as pots, buckets and fertilizer was taken to Savannah by DEA agents to be processed. The D.E.A. estimated that if the plants had grown to full potential the street value would have been $1,800,000.00. No arrests have been made at this time.
