LaFern Hutcheson Mayers
LaFern Hutcheson Mayers, age 81, died Sunday, September 30, 2007 in
the Appling Health Care. She was born September 7, 1926 in Appling
County and had resided here most of her life. She was a faithful
member of Baxley First Baptist Church where she taught the
Homebuilders Ladies Sunday School Class for the past forty plus
years. Even during her three years and nine months she stayed at
Appling Convalescent Center she represented First Baptist Church as
a Sunday School Teacher each Sunday morning. Mrs. Mayers was a
retired public school teacher, and a successful local business
woman. She was a member of the Baxley Chapter #363, Order of the
Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband of over
forty-four years, C. Brookie Mayers a daughter Dianne Mayers
Harrington, two sons, Mike and Guy Mayers, and a niece, Joan Nails.
She was the daughter of the late Guyton E. Hutcheson and the late
Essie Thomas Hutcheson.
She is survived
by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and James Cox of Baxley and
Becky and Dan Maloy of Dallas, Ga.; son-in-law, Gil Harrington of
Eastman; two granddaughters, Christy Smith of Sharpsburg and Liz
Maloy of Savannah; grandsons, Dan and Kristy Hendrix of McDonough
and Daniel Maloy of Statesboro; Great grandchildren Stephen Smith
and Julia Smith of Sharpsburg, Josh, Kimmie, and Sammie Hendrix of
McDonough; brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Kathy Hutcheson of
Marion Texas; brothers-in-law and their wives, Jimmy and Faye Mayers
and Lee and Peggy Mayers all of Baxley; aunts, Marie Thomas of
Baxley and Pauline Mills Copeland of McDonough; Uncle, Jack Thomas
of Baxley. She is also survived by a host of beloved nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. from The
First Baptist Church with Rev. Jay Meadows, and Rev. John Hutcheson
officiating. Interment followed in the Zoar Cemetery.
Active
pallbearers were Don Clinton, Doug Doyle, Larry Britt, Michael
Dennis, Edsel Mayers, Paul Hutcheson and David Hutcheson.
Honorary
pallbearers were the member of the Homebuilders Sunday School Class
of First Baptist Church.
Musical
selections were rendered by Tommy Jordan, Gail Carter and Claire
Tanner.
Arrangements
were under the direction of David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Woodward Hobbs
Woodward Hobbs, age 90 of
Loganville ,Ga. passed away Thursday, September 27, 2007 in the Park
Place Nursing Facility in Monroe, Ga. Mr. Hobbs was born
August 31, 1917 in Clay County, Alabama to the late June Woodward
Hobbs and the late Ivera Wesley Hobbs. He was preceded in
death by brothers, Willie Hobbs, Burl Hobbs, and Dewey Hobbs.
Survivors include his wife, Mary
Bill Deen Hobbs of Loganville, daughter & son in law, Gloria and
Paul Homer of Bethlehem, Ga; 2 Grandchildren and 15 nieces and
nephews also survive.
Visitation will be Friday evening
from 6 until 8 pm at Swain Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held
Saturday, September 29, at 11:oo am from the chapel of Swain Funeral
Home with the Rev. David Deen officiating. Interment will
follow in the Deen Cemetery.

Martha M. Stone Anderson
Martha M. Stone
Anderson, age 82, died Saturday, September 22, 2007 in the Shands
Hospital in Gainesville, FL. She was born August 5, 1925 in Jeff
Davis County and had resided in Baxley and Hazlehurst before moving
to Keystone Hights , FL in 1999. She was a retired seamstress and
had worked for Ship and Shore before her retirement. She was of the
Church of God faith and had attended Big Oaks Church of God. She was
the daughter of the late Charlie Stone and the late Annie Turner
Stone.
She is survived
by two daughters and son’s-in-law, Phyllis Ann and Steve Manning of
Keystone Heights, FL and Jackie and Aaron Branch, Jr. of Baxley:
four sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Bonnie Williams of
Baxley, Danny and Bridgette Williams of Brunswick , Harry and Cindy
Williams of Statesboro and Glenn Williams of Baxley: one sister,
Mary Edna Knight of Brunswick and two brothers, Emory Stone of
Savannah and Otis Stone of Jacksonville: sixteen grandchildren and
fourteen great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, September 25, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel
of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Creig Smith and Rev.
Virginia Herrington officiating. Interment followed in the Satilla
Freewill Church Cemetery in Jeff Davis County.
Active
pallbearers were grandsons, Randy Branch, Roger Branch, Rickey
Branch, Jeffery Williams, Dustin Williams, Weston Williams, Robyn
Williams, Stacey Williams and Clayton Manning.
Honorary
pallbearers were all friends in attendance.
Musical
selection were rendered by Bonita Anderson, Charlie Leggett and
Larry Varnadoe.

Odis Carroll White
Odis Carroll White , age 80, of
Baxley, died Friday, September 21, 2007 in St. Joseph's Hospital in
Savannah . He was born April 30, 1927 in Dodge County to the
late John Henry White and the late Fennie Louzia Jones White.
He was a member of Friendship Methodist Church and was a retired
electrician. he played music for numerous nursing homes and
churches in Appling County. He was preceded in death by
brothers, Ed White & Dorsey White, sisters, Estelle Beach, Birdie
Anderson, and Adell Floyd.
He is survuved by his wife Lucille
White of Baxley; 2 sons, Wendell C. White of Baxley and Jeffrey A.
White of Helena; sister Pat Teston of Brunswick; brother Willie
(Louise) White of Jacksonville; 3 grandchildren Cory White, Derick
White, and Ashley White.
Visitation will be held Wednesday,
September 26, 2007 from 6 until 8 PM at Swain Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday, September 27, 2007, at 2:00 pm from the chapel of Swain
Funeral Home with the Rev. Lonnie Weaver & Rev. Frank Davidson

Crosby
Otto Crosby, age 62, died Tuesday,
September 18, 2007, in the Meadows Regional Hospital in Vidalia. He
was born August 5, 1945 in Appling County and had lived here all of
his life. He was a retired construction worker and had been employed
with Bax Steel before his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was the son of the late George Crosby and the late Thelma Martin
Crosby.
He is survived by his wife, Arnie
Sue Crosby of Baxley: one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Larry
Wells of Milan, GA; two grandchildren, Searia and Jordon Wells: five
sisters, Jeanell Steed, Thelma Meeks and Velma McKenzie all of Alma:
Vinnie Boartight of Baxley, and Lee Callanni of Cleveland, Ohio: six
brothers, George Crosby, Walter Crosby and Steve Crosby all of
Baxley, Berry Crosby of Hazlehurst, Leon Crosby of New Madrid,
Missouri and Jackson Crosby of Omaha, Nebraska : three half-sisters:
Dorene Nash of Baxley, Ann Woodcock of Statesboro and Bessie Sykes
of Chicago, Illinois: several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, September 20, 2007 in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral
Home with Rev. Philip Osteen and Rev. Earnest Dyal officiating.
Interment followed in the Midway Church Cemetery.

Baxley, Jason Griffin, Kevin Thomas, Richard Russell, Kelly Murphy,
Dwain Spell, Barbara Perry, Jared Strickland and Denise Perry.

Merle Summerall Carter
Merle Summerall Carter, age 92, of
Baxley died on Sunday, September 19, 2007 in the Appling Healthcare
System after a short illness. Mrs. Carter was born December
18, 1914 in Appling County to the late Met Summerall & the late
Lennie Miles Summerall. She was a member of the Ten Mile Creek
Baptist Church & active in the DAR. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Leslie Carter, a son, Jerry Carter & a daughter,
Joan Steedley.
Survivors include 1 Daughter and
Son in law, Jane and Sherwood Vaughn of Martinez; Son in law, Lloyd
Steedley, Jr. of Baxley. Grandchildren, Sherry Steedley,
Kellie & Chris Pallas, Mark & Shanda Vaughn, Steve and Trudy
Steedley, Sharon and Derek Blitch & Leslie & Eddie Gunn. 7
Great Grandchildren also survive.

Runell Kimbrel Tillman
Mrs. Runell Kimbrel Tillman, age 76 of
Baxley died Sunday. September 16, 2007, in the Appling Healthcare System
after an extended illness. Mrs. Tillman was
born June 22, 1931 in Appling County to the late Benjamin Franklin
Kimbrel & the late Wilma Williams Kimbrel. She was a member of
Bethel United Methodist Church where she was active in the United
Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev.
Henry Curtis Tillman and a brother, James Kimbrel.
Survivors include 3 Daughters & Sons
in law, Diane & Duane Bennett of Surrency, Rhonda and Billy Hadley of
LaGrange & Joyce & Andy Glenn of Johns Island SC; 2 Sons and Daughters

Maude Morgan Stipe
Maude Morgan Stipe, age 92 of Baxley,
died Friday, September 14, 2007 in the Appling Healthcare System.
Mrs. Stipe was born November 17, 1914 in Moorefield, Arkansas to the
late Hamblin Hogan and Frances Clyde Martin Morgan. She had
resided in Appling County for the past 66 years. She was a member
of the First United Methodist Church where she taught kindergarten
Sunday School class for over 53 years, and was a member of the Young At
Heart. She was co-founder of Altamaha Oil Company with her husband
of 63 years, Everett Irving Stipe. She was active in the Tar
Tappers, Appling Country Club, Ladies Golf Association, and Georgia
Oilmen's Association.
Survivors include 4 sons and Daughters in Law,
Daniel & Linda Stipe of Waycross, Charles Ray & Becky Stipe of Baxley,
Bill & Rhonda Stipe of Jesup & Jimmy & Lynn Stipe of Baxley; 2 Sisters &
Brother in Law, Nina & Carl Dene Medlock & Floy Boles all of Cave City,
AR; 1 Brother, Clyde Ralph Morgan of Moorefield, AR. 17 Grandchildren &
28 Great Grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6:00 until 8:00 at Swain Funeral
Home.

2007 at 3:00 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church with the Rev.

Dr. Oliver Raleigh Finch, Sr.
Dr. Oliver Raleigh Finch, Sr. age 79 of
Jacksonville, Fl. Died Monday, September 10, 2007 in The
Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville. Dr. Finch was born
October, 22, 1927 in Bulloch County, Ga to the late Brooks &
Ruby Clark Finch. After moving to Glennville, GA in 1943,
he attended Glennville High School going on to graduate from
Georgia Southern in 1948 with a degree in Education. He
married Gloria McDonald on June 30, 1953, The Couple resided
in Baxley where Dr. Finch was principal of Baxley Elementary
School until moving to Florida in 1960. In 1966 Dr. Finch
and his family moved to Jacksonville where he was employed
by Florida Junior College, later known from the University
of Alabama. He retired after years of dedicated service to
the Junior College. He was a member of Southside Methodist
Church in Jacksonville. Through the years Dr. Finch was
involved in community organizations including the
Association of Retarded Citizens & the Southside Rotary
Club. He was an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents,
& wife, he was preceded in death by a son Christopher Finch.
Survivors include: 2 daughters, Nina Finch of
Callahan, FL and Marcy Finch Dunavant of Jacksonville, Fl;
son Oliver R. Finch, Jr. & wife, Sandy of Port Orange, Fl;
Brother Jesse Finch & wife Gloria of Glennville, Special
friend, Ethel Lee of Jacksonville, Fl; 9 grandchildren and 1
great grandchild also survives.
Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6
until 8 pm at Swain Funeral Home.

September 13, at 2:00 pm from the Chapel of Swain Funeral

Mervin V. Standifer, Sr.
Mervin V. Standifer, Sr. died
Saturday, September 1, 2007 at his residence in Baxley. He was born
July 11, 1942 in Fork Ridge, Kentucky. and had resided in Baxley
since 1998. He was a retired Meat Cutter and was a member of
Consolation Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy
serving in the Vietnam Conflict. He was the son of the late George
Standifer and the late Ada Myers Standifer.
He is survived by his
wife of 41 years, Janice Standifer of Baxley: two daughters and
son’s-in-law, Angela and Michael Fitch of Jefferson, GA. and
Charlene and Jim Davey of Lakeworth, FL.: one son, Mervin V.
Standifer, Jr. Of Cleveland, Ohio: four sisters, Fredis Smith of IN,
Charlene McMillian of AZ. Christene Smith of AZ and Linda Easter of
Mich.: six grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were
held Monday, September 3, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. from the Consolation
Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Dubberly and Rev. Jerry
Newell officiating. Interment followed in the Zion Church of God
Cemetery.

Standifer and Charles Pike.

"Joe" Carter
Josephus "Joe" Carter age 76 of
Milner, Ga , died Sept. 2 in Upson County Regional
Hospital after an short illness. Mr. Carter was born July 23,
1931 in Appling County to the late Robert Claire Carter & the late
Elma Knight Carter. He was retired from the Georgia State
Labor Department as a supervisor and served in the Air Force as a
sergeant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Page
Carter & a brother, Nathan Carter.
He is survived by is his wife, Glady's
Carter of Milner; 2 daughters, Joni Lynn ( Tommy) Mann of Milner &
Jane ( Robert) Harkins of Sharpesburg; 1 son, Daniel (Lynn) Carter
of Molena; 1 Sister, Janice Rozar of Baxley; 2 Brothers, David "
