Doctor "Doc" Richard LeWayne Camberg

Doctor Camberg died Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Appling Healthcare System.

Doctor Camberg was born December 27, 1930 in Carlton, Oregon to the late Clifford Jones and the late Verna Smith Jones Camberg. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He established one of the first sports medicine clinics in Florida and worked tirelessly to care for injured law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and paramedics. He graduated from Oregon State University and the University of Florida College of Medicine in 1962 and began his practice when doctors still made house calls. Dr. Camberg was an eagle scout, and had numerous awards for decades of community service, and volunteered medical services to high school and college athletes. He moved from Jacksonville, FL to Patterson to raise blueberries and continued his medical career as an ER doctor in the Waycross, Baxley, and Alma areas.

Survivors Include: His wife, Linda Timmons Camberg of Patterson; 3 daughters, Susanne C. Reed of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Lorilee Worsham and husband Mark of Savannah, and Lee Camberg of Tampa, FL. 4 Grandchildren, Jennifer Reed, Ansley Reed, Marshall Worsham, and John Micheal Worsham, 1 great grandson, William Peyton Reed.

Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 12, at 7:30 pm from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at a later date at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oregon

Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:30 until 7:30.

Ervin Anthony Carter

Mr. Ervin Anthony Carter died Monday, June 1, 2009 in the Appling Healthcare System.

Mr. Carter was born April 10, 1945 in Jeff Davis County to the late Wallace A. and Ruby Burkette Carter. He was a former employee of D.L. Lee and Sons. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his former wife, Willamae Horton Carter, 3 brothers, Aldon Carter, Howard Carter, and Comer Carter.

Survivors Include: Spouse – Martha Diane Carter of Baxley, 2 Daughters and Son in law, Sandra and Timothy Griffin and Ann Michelle Carter all of Baxley; 2 sons and daughter in law, Chief Aaron and Sara Carter and Cpl. John Robert Barber all of Baxley; sister, Anna Lou Dixon of Augusta; 5 grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from Zion Church of God

Body will lie in state one hour prior to funeral services

Interment: Church Cemetery

Alma Dean "Missy" Griffin

Alma Dean “Missy” Griffin age 64, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Community Hospice House in Vidalia.  She was born July 25, 1944 in Appling County and had resided here all of her life.  She was retired from the Appling County Board of Education where she had worked in the cafeteria at Appling County Middle School.  She was the daughter of the late Odell Bullard and Essie Mae Johnson Bullard.

She is survived by her husband, Carlton Griffin of Baxley; a son and daughter-in-law Brandon and Amber Griffin of Baxley: her mother, Essie Mae Bullard of Baxley; two sisters, Peggy Rentz of Baxley and Skizzal Burkhalter of Baxley; brother, Bozzy Bullard of Baxley:

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Justin McLellan and Rev. Charles Carter officiating.  Interment will follow in the Baxley Graveyard.

Active pallbearers are Eddie Rentz, Brad Pickern,  Kraig Burkhalter, Jim B. Bullard, William Hall and Kevin Simmons.

Honorary pallbearers are all friends attending the funeral service.

James Alton Lamb

Mr. James Alton Lamb died May 30, 2009.

Mr. Lamb was born to Alonzo and Leona Davis Lamb on September 6, 1926 in Baxley, GA. He was married to Hazel Lamb and was a faithful member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class and a Deacon. Mr. Lamb was a lifelong resident of Appling County and a retired farmer.

Survivors Include: His wife Hazel Lamb of Baxley, Two daughters – Becky (Russell) Murray and Edwina Jones all of Baxley, One Brother – Edwin “Nig” (Shirley) Lamb of Baxley, Three grandchildren – Karrie Carter, Brian Murray, and Blake Jones, Five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Active Pallbearers: Brian Murray, Blake Jones, Ed Lamb, Mike Lamb, Dennis Lamb, and Orby Lamb.

Honorary Pallbearers: Mens Sunday School Class, Deacons of Zion Baptist, Chris and Jeanine Horton, Richard and Ann Eason, Chris Rowell, and Dr. Barry Luskey and Staff.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Missionary Baptist Church

Troy Murray

Mr. Troy Murray died Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick.

Mr. Murray was born September 9, 1935 in Appling Co. to the late Otis Eston and Adell Campbell Murray. He was a member of Local 474, worked with Union Camp for 13 years, was Appling Co Public Works Derector and was a farmer. He was preceded in death by sisters, Alene Brackett, Laverne Payne, Debra Murray, brothers, Cecil Murray and Harold Murray.

Survivors Include: Wife, Erma Aycock Murray, daughter and son in law, Wanda and Darnell Carter, son and daughter in law Jeffery and Cheryl Murray, all of Surrency, grandchildren, Dawn Carter Branch, Jennifer Murray Tillman, and Will Murray, great grandchildren, Presley Tillman and Jace Tillman, special great niece, Ellie Grace Aycock, brothers, Curtis Murray of Auberdale, FL, George Murray of Surrency, Roy Murray of Sparta, David Murray, J.W. Bernadine Hillis

Bernadine Hillis died Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Pavilion.

Mrs. Hillis was born September 24, 1922 to the late James Monroe Burkett and the late Maniza Ellis Burkett. Se was of the Church of God faith and was retired from Pantry Pride as a a cashier. She had resided in Baxley since 2004. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Johnnie Antone, and a son, Billy Clements.

Survivors Include: Her husband, Joseph Hillis of Baxley; 2 stepsons, Robert Lamar Hillis of Baxley, and Lloyd Ritch Hillis of Tampa, FL, a sister, Peggy Mayers of Baxley.

Memorial Services will be held Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 pm from the chapel of Swain Funeral Home.

Minister: Rev. Monty Lasseter.

The family will assemble at the residence, 605 Lackawana Street.

William Elgin Brown

William Elgin Brown died Tuesday, May 26, 2009 after an extended illness.

Mr. Brown was born October 28, 1920 in Dalton, GA. He was a member of Dunn Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Brown was former owner and operator of Brown Well Drilling Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Geneive Sellers Brown.

Survivors Include: A son and daughter in law, Mike and Janet Brown of Baxley; one sister, Bonnie Knorzer of Hazlehurst; grandchildren, Stephen and Wife Danielle Brown. A caregiver Phyllis Williams.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from Satilla Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ministers: Rev. Rick Brown and Rev. Jack Peeler.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 27, 2009 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home.

The Family will assemble at the home, Mike and Janet Brown 3385 Hatch Parkway S.

Ruby Dell Morris Crabb

Ruby Dell Morris Crabb, age 67, of Ailey, GA   died Saturday, May 23, 2009 in Baldwyn, Mississippi.  She was born September 5, 1941 in Appling County and had resided here until moving to Ailey nine years ago.  She was a homemaker and was the daughter of the late Monroe Hutto and the late Evelyn Nash Hutto.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Billy Morris.

She is survived by her husband, Ed Crabb of Ailey: two sons, Ricky Morris of Baxley, and Dennis Morris of Blue Ridge, Ga.: four brothers, Floyce Hutto of McRae, Robert Spell of Baxley, James Spell of Lyons, and Charles Spell of Baxley; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at David E. Miles Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 27, in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Service with Rev. Allen Richardson officiating.  Interment will follow in the Baxley Graveyard.

Lola Grace Beckworth

Lola Grace Beckworth died Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the McDuffie County Hospital in Thomson, GA after an extended illness.

Mrs. Beckworth was born October 16, 1921 in Appling County to the late Willie Samuel and Grace Hall Beckworth. She was of the Baptist Faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Abram Beckworth.

Survivors Include: 7 daughters, Christine Oxendine of Baxley, Myrtle Hogbin of Alexandria, VA, Clementine Schulz of Jacksonville, Fl, Merita Osmond of Plant City, FL., Benerline Walters of Valrico, FL, Janice Yee of Augusta, and Janie Jenkins of Watkinsville; 3 sons, Willis Beckworth of Gonzales, LA, Henry F. Beckwoth of Mitchell and Jerry J. Beckworth of Gibson. 18 Grandchildren, 22 Great Grandchildren and 13 great great grandchilren.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, May 24, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home.

Interment: Beckworth-Swinson Cemetery

Leonard Ray Odom

Leonard Ray Odom, age 36, who died suddenly Sunday, May 17th in Alamo, Ga. He was born in Vidalia, GA and had resided in Baxley for most of his life. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, R. D. and Ann Hutchinson and his paternal grandfather, Wade Merrith Odom.

He is survived by his wife, Stacy C. Odom of Baxley: Son, Johnny Tyler Odom of Baxley: father and mother, Wade Leonard and Joann Hutchinson Odom of Baxley: brother, Larry Dewayne Odom and wife, Renae Odom of Baxley: Grandmother, Lucille Odom and special friend, Michelle Reid of Baxley: several aunts and uncle and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home wit Rev. Nathan Dyal officiating. Interment will follow in the Calvery Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are David Portalati, David Williamson, J. L. Gregory, Kenneth Odom, Tony Watts, and Larry Hall.

John M. Carter

Mr. John M. Carter died Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Pavilion after an extended illness.

Mr. Carter was born February 17, 1914 in Appling County to the late Grover Cleveland and Pearl Blanton Carter. He was a member of Memorial Free Will Baptist Church and was a farmer.

Survivors Include: His wife of 76 years, Beatrice Page Carter of Baxley; daughter and son in law, Shelba and Ronnie Tucker of Tifton, son and daughter in law, Rev. Virgil and Betty Carter of Baxley; sister, Velma Kirk of Baxley; 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren also survive.

Active Pallbearers: Mark Melton, A.P. Hunter, Doug Hall, Taff Vaughn, Jerad Stone, Darrell Holcomb, and Bob Tucker.

Honorary Pallbearers: Staff of the Pavilion, Anna and Ed Harris, Bobbie and Cutis McMillan, and Dr. Orlando Fernando.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 14, at 2:00 p.m. from Memorial Free Will Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Interment: In the church cemetery
