Miller, age 81, died Friday, September 25, 2009 her residence.
She was born January 25, 1928 in
Appling
County and had resided here
all of her life. She was a retired seamstress and had worked at
Ship and Shore before her retirement. She was a member of
Midway
Baptist Church
and the daughter of the late Katie Williams.
She is
survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah and Roger
Burkette, of Hazlehurst, Joyce and Tommy Roach of Surrency;
eight sons and daughters-in-law, Mackilee “Peewee” Miller, of
Baxley, Herman and Myrle Miller of Surrency, George and Janie
Miller of Baxley, Michael Miller of Baxley, Tony and Dixie
Miller of Canton, GA, and Steven and Angela of Woodville, Texas:
27 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren also survive
Funeral
services were held Monday, September 28, at 2:00 P.M. in Midway
Baptist Church
with Rev. Wayne Williamson Officiating. Interment followed in
the Midway
Church Cemetery.
Active
pallbearers were Michael Beecher, Larry Dyal, Don Webb, Billy
Wayne Sellers, Jason Sellers, and Donald Hunter.
Musical
selections were rendered by Rev. Billy Gardner and Cecile
Griffin.

Sudie Brewer Hartley
Sudie Brewer
Hartley, age 73, died Monday, September 21, 2009 in the
St. Joseph Hospital
in Savannah.
She was born March 31, 1936 in
Lumber City, Georgia.
She had resided in Baxley for the past thirty-eight years. She
was a retired seamstress and a member of the International
Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union.
She had worked with Ship and Shore before her retirement. She
was of the Baptist faith and she was preceded in death by a son,
Cecil Thompson. She was the daughter of the late Seward Brewer
and the late Viola Williams Brewer.
She is
survived by her husband, Johnny Hartley, Jr.; three daughter and
sons-in-law, Dianne and Dale Sapp of Baxley, Connie and Wayne
Carter of Baxley and Cindy and Tim Claxton of Baxley; four sons
and daughters-in-law, Tony Lee Thompson of Helena, Stevie
Thompson of Houston, Texas and Raymond and Terry Thompson of
Baxley and Johnny Hartley, Jr. of Blackshear; five sisters,
Onita Varnardore of Lumber City, Georgia, Jammie Lewis of
Tallulah, GA, Barbara Scott of Towns, GA, Lucille Martin of
Warner Robins, GA, and Kay Tarpley of Baxley. One brother,
Raleigh Brewer of Eastman; nineteen grandchildren and seventeen
great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in
the chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Park
officiating. Interment followed in the
Omega
Cemetery.

Chip Griffis, David Thompson, Jason Thompson and David Beckworth..

Jessie Holley, age 84, of Baxley, died on Wednesday, Sept. 16,
2009
Mr. Holley
was born November 29, 1924 in Jefferson County to the late
Parkey Lee & Annie Prescott Holley. He was a member of the First
Baptist Church. Mr. Holley was retired from Farmers Home
Administration with 40 years of service & was a veteran of the
U.S. Army having served in WWII & received the Purple Heart. He
was a member of the Baxley Lions Club. Mr. Holley was preceded
in death by his sisters, Ada hood, Doretha Hood, Mildred Cowart,
& Agnes Aldridge.
Survivors
are: His wife, Sue Nail Holley of Baxley; 2 sisters &
brother-in-law, Eva Hobbs and Barbara & Forrest Crutfield all of
Thompson, Ga.; brothers & sisters-in-law, Henry T. & Gloria
Holley of Augusta, Ga. and Welton Chuck & Mildred Holley of
Wrens; a sister-in-law , Jane M. Holley of North Augusta, S.C.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Royce Elbert
Blanton, age 71, died on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 at his residence
in Jacksonville, Florida.
Mr. Blanton
was born May 30, 1938 in Appling County to the late Elbert &
Ruth Page Blanton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and
was a retired truck driver with USF Dugan.

Modene (Dean) Eason
Alvarez, age 82. died Friday, September 11, 2009, in the
Homestead Hospital, in Homestead, Florida. She was born
August 18, 1927 in Appling County and was residing in Homestead
at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Lois
Eason and the late Julie M. Higginbotham Eason.
She is
survived by her husband, Carlos T. Alvarez of Homestead, FL; two
sons, Wayne Eason of Orange Park, FL and Jerry Eason of
Homestead, FL; two daughters, Julie Eason Smith of Winter
Springs, FL, and Deborah R. Whitner of Orange Park FL; six
sisters, Betty Lunger of Hollywood, FL, Gail Britt of Marianna,
FL, Janie Shook of Riverdale, GA, Barbara Eason of Marianna, FL,
Nan Friend of Henderson NV. and Ann Taaffe of Steinhatchee, FL:
three brothers, George Eason of Huntsville, AL, Randall Eason of
Forest Park, GA and Curtis Eason of Morrow, GA: thirteen
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.

chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home with grandson, Richard
Eason delivering the eulogy and grandson Jonathan Riley the
reading of two poems, Rev. Rick Brown officiated . Interment
followed in the Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery.

Walker
Mrs. Ethel Walker died Sunday,
September 13, 2009 in the Appling Healthcare System.
Mrs. Ethel Walker was born December
20, 1920 in Appling County to the late Benjamin Franklin
Hall Sr. and the late Lillie Rentz Hall. She was a member of
Red Oak Baptist church. Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by
her husband, Johnny Walker, 12 brothers, sisters, and 2
great grandchildren.
Survivors are: 4 daughters and sons
in law, Mary Lee Edenfield of Baxley, Ester and M.A. Dixon
of Bristol, Montine and Kenneth Johnson of McRae, and Kay
and Kim Stone of Baxley; sons and daughter in law, Edward
“Buddy” Walker of Baxley and Carroll and Karen Walker of
Bristol. 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and 3
great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews
also survive.

Frances Marie Thornton, age 50, died Monday, August 31, 2009
at her residence.
She was born in Appling County August 18, 1959. She
was disable and had worked at the Appling Health Care System
in the housekeeping before becoming disable. She was a
member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall and she was
the daughter of the late William Emory Thornton and the late
Lydia Pearl Westberry Thornton.
She is survived by a son, Dwaine Emory Edwards of
Baxley; three sisters, Jane Ann Smith of Baxley, Shirley
Mann of Baxley and Mary Sharp of Baxley; four nieces, Anita
Spell of Odom, Alise Mann, Shelia Carter and Linda Holton
all of Baxley.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 5, 2009
at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of David E. Miles Funeral Home
with Rev. Phillip Osteen and Rev. Frank Davison officiating.
Interment followed in the Surrency City Cemetery.

Monday, August 31, 2009 at her residence. She was born
August 12, 1930 in Appling County and had resided here all
of her life. She was a home maker and a member of Satilla
Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W
C. Nash, daughter Renee Nash Scott and two half brothers,
Walter Crosby and Otto Crosby. She was the daughter of the
late George Crosby and Dora Shipes Crosby.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law
Vickie and Daniel Adams of Eatonton; sons and
daughter-in-law, William G “Billy” and Lee Ann Nash of
Duddley, and Michael Nash of Baxley; half-brothers, Steve
Crosby of Baxley, Barry Crosby of Hazlehurst, Leon Crosby of
New Madrid Missouri, Jackson Crosby of Omaha, NE; seven
grandchildren and four great- grandchildren also survive

2, 2009 at 2:30 P.M. in Satilla Baptist Church with Rev.
Roger Taylor and Rev. Earnest Dyal officiating. Interment
followed in the Satilla Baptist Church Cemetery.

Doretha Lynn Deal
Doretha Lynn Deal, age 90, passed away Wednesday, September
2, 2009 in the Bethany Nursing Center in Vidalia, GA.. She
was born November 14, 1918 in Glynn County, and had resided
in Appling County
since 1935. In 1959,
she and her husband, Darwin started the Farm Bureau
Insurance Agency in Appling County. She served as secretary
of the Appling County Farm Bureau for twenty two years.
She was the oldest living member of Lake Chapel Church. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin E. Deal and two
brothers, Rudolph Lynn and Henry Carl Lynn, Jr. and her
step-mother Hilda Franklin Lynn. She was the daughter of
the late Henry Carl Lynn Sr. and Alma Stanfield Lynn. She is
survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Roy
Bass of Baxley, and Annette and Jimmy Carter of
Hinesville,; three sons and daughters-in-law, Elwyn and
Nancy Deal of Anderson, S. C., Lynn and Betty Deal of
Reidsville, and Eldon and Pam Deal of Baxley; sister and
brother-in-law, Cydelle and Don Winstead of Tampa Fl.;
thirteen grandchildren; eight grandchildren, and 1
great-great grandchild.
Visitation
will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at David E. Miles Funeral
Home.
Funeral
services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Lake Chapel
Church with Elder Mickey Durden, Elder William H. “Bill”
Durrence, Elwyn Deal and Jason Deal officiating. Interment
will follow in the Lake Chapel Church Cemetery.
The body
will be placed in the church one hour prior to the funeral
service.

Ann Lewis, 83, died Sunday. Miss Lewis was of the Baptist
faith. She was employed as a Clerk for the Pepsi Cola Co.

Amber Elizabeth Thomas was born
December 1, 1988 in Ware County to the late Samuel Bart
Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Morris Thomas. She was a member of
Emanuel Baptist Church. Amber was a Sophomore at Georgia
Southern College were previously honored Statewide award for
Young Authors for 2 continuous years, Who’s Who Students
among Georgia’s High Schools and honored among State
Championship in Chess for several years. She was preceded in
death by her Maternal Grandfather, Willie L. “Bill” and
Cousin, Devin Shaye Calhoun.
