Many
organizations attended Career Day including:
GSP- Trooper Keith Mac- Trooper Mac works three
different counties; (Appling, Toombs, and Tattnall.) He
has been in law enforcement for 28 yrs and he told them
there is never a dull moment. He gave them the
requirements on how to become a Georgia State Trooper.
You must know how to read, write, and mathematics. It
is critical that you know this when writing up an
accident /arrest report. He told them that GSP was
created in 1937.
Cosmetology - Heather Hutcheson and Kathy Bratcher -
They both live in Baxley, but work in Vidalia at Smart
Style in Wal-mart. They told them that it took them 1
year and 4 core classes before they earned their
degrees. They told the class that you can rent out a
booth or own your own shop, but they preferred to rent
out booths. Ms. Bratcher stated that no matter how your
day starter good or bad, you need to always show a smile
and never show any negativity towards your co-workers or
your last customer. You need to know your chemicals.
Most important information is always ask questions and
make sure you communicate on how much to cut off, cause
once you cut it off it’s gone. They love to converse
with the public.
Appling Rescue- Kim Griffin and Diane Tomberlin- Kim
and Diane showed them the Rescue vehicle and explained
what the Jaws of Life is and what its purpose
(basically it’s used when someone is trapped in a
vehicle they can cut them out. Explained what their
jobs consist of; they are basically on the scene before
or during EMS arrives to assist in helping the wounded.
Dr. Tonya Fordham: She explains how long you have
to go to school which it took her 13 years before she
earned her degree. Many hours of studying to learn all
different kinds of medicines and how much to give
patience’s and if they have any allergic reaction to any
medicines you need to know how to treat it quickly.
You must be concerned about your patience’s and listen
to their problems. (Dr. Fordham is a very good listener
by the way, thought I would throw that in for good
measurement.)
Roger Branch: He is the vice president of the
Cotton/peanut Gin out on 15 next to the Appling/ Pierce
County line. He was showing the students how you
extract seeds from the cotton. He also told them that
they had 37 trucks take out 27,000 tons of peanuts to
the customers once they were dried.
Jim
Sewell: He is employed by CruiseOne. His job is
to provide great service and expert advice on which
cruise line to take. CruiseOne‘s main goal is to send
you around the world to warm up, cool down, or just
relax with a loved one. They take all the headaches
away from you so you can enjoy your vacation. He
explained what the cruise liner looked like. It is a
different world. They have entertainment on board,
childcare, formal and informal dining, shows and pools.
Lewis Parker also spoke about law enforcements. He
stated that a job is something you do, but a career is
something you train for that is permanent.
Jane
Kennedy: Asst. District Attorney. She told the
students what a prosecutor job consists of. They
handle criminal cases. They are like CSI (Criminal Scene
Investigation)
There were many other organizations speaking to the 6th,
7th, and 8th grade at the Middle School.
Many thanks go out to all who participated in Career
Day.
This career day was chosen to help in making decisions
for a more advanced look at opportunities that our
children can have as a career in today’s work force.
